Eye Contact Protocol
Follow the agreed rule for holding, lowering, or requesting eye contact during a scene or formal interaction.
What it is
Eye Contact Protocol is an agreed rule for when the sub should look at, look away from, or ask to meet their Dom’s eyes. It may apply during commands, reports, correction, service, or formal scenes. Some dynamics require direct eye contact; others use lowered eyes. Neither version is automatically more submissive—the task is following the rule chosen for that interaction.
Why it is submissive
The sub gives the Dom some control over where their attention is directed. They may hold eye contact when told, lower their gaze until invited to look, or ask before seeking direct contact. The Dom decides when the sub’s gaze is offered, withheld, or changed.
Why people may like it
Eye contact can change the intensity of an interaction very quickly. Holding the Dom’s gaze may feel intimate, exposing, challenging, or difficult to hide behind. Lowering the eyes may feel deferential or calming and can make the sub focus more closely on the Dom’s voice. For some people, the strongest moment is being told to look up and receiving the Dom’s full attention.
Ways to run it
- Lowered Gaze
- The sub keeps their eyes lowered during formal protocol unless the Dom instructs them to look up.
- Permission to Look
- The sub waits for a cue or asks before making sustained eye contact with the Dom.
- Look at Me
- The sub meets and holds the Dom’s gaze when commanded, including during difficult answers or correction.
- Eye Contact While Reporting
- The sub maintains eye contact while giving a report, confession, apology, or requested explanation.
- Discreet Gaze Signal
- The Dom uses a subtle cue to direct the sub’s gaze during social or public situations.
How this task works
Eye Contact Protocol is a protocol from the protocol & positions chart. This is an in-person task — it needs you and your Dom in the same room. It's a kink task — charged with power exchange, though not explicit.
Beginner-friendly: a good early assignment in a new dynamic. Standard care applies: negotiate first, agree on limits, and check in afterward.
