Punishment No. 48 of 204
Speak Only When Addressed
Allow the submissive to speak only after the Dominant addresses them.
What it is
Speak Only When Addressed removes the submissive's ability to start ordinary conversation. They may answer when the Dominant speaks to them or asks a direct question, but unprompted comments and questions stay unsaid. The rule can apply during a scene, meal, service period, or other defined interaction. Unlike Ask Permission to Speak, there is no request that opens conversation. The Dom decides when the verbal exchange begins.
What makes it punishing
The difficult part is having something to say and being required to wait. The sub cannot rescue an awkward silence, add their opinion, or ask for attention simply because they want to. Their voice enters the interaction only after the Dominant makes room for it.
Why Dominants Choose It
This punishment puts the pace of conversation firmly in the Dominant's hands while still allowing useful dialogue. The Dom chooses when the submissive is invited into the exchange and when silence returns. That can create a strong sense that attention is granted rather than assumed. It may also suit a correction aimed at interrupting, talking over someone, or constantly seeking the floor.
Ways to run it
- Direct Questions Only
- The submissive answers direct questions but does not respond to general remarks or comments.
- Name as the Trigger
- The sub may speak only after the Dominant directly addresses them by name or title.
- Meal Protocol
- The rule stays active through a meal, with conversation opened only by the Dominant.
- Service Protocol
- The sub performs an assigned service quietly and speaks only when the Dominant addresses them.
- Opened Conversation Window
- The Dominant deliberately opens a brief conversation period and closes it when the exchange is finished.
How this punishment works
Speak Only When Addressed is from the speech & communication restrictions category. This is an in-person punishment — it needs you and your Dom in the same room. It's a kink punishment — charged with power exchange, though not explicit.
Beginner-friendly: a possible early consequence in a new dynamic.
