What it is

Ask Before Speaking is a speech protocol in which the sub waits for permission before initiating conversation during a defined scene or formal period. The rule may still allow direct answers, required reports, or an agreed phrase for requesting speech. Its purpose is to control when the sub begins speaking, not to prevent safewords, necessary clarification, or communication about a real concern.

Why it is submissive

The sub gives up conversational initiative and waits to be invited into the exchange. They must listen, remain attentive, and ask before adding their own words rather than speaking whenever an impulse arises. The Dom controls the pace of conversation and decides when the sub’s voice enters it. Silence therefore becomes an active form of obedience.

Why people may like it

Restricting ordinary speech can change the atmosphere quickly. Silence may make the interaction feel formal, focused, or more intense, while waiting to speak can create vulnerability and frustration. The sub may become more aware of tone, posture, and the Dom’s smallest cues because words are no longer automatic. Doms may enjoy the quiet attention and the ability to decide when an answer, request, or confession is allowed.

Ways to run it

Permission to Initiate Speech
The sub may answer direct questions but must ask before starting a new subject.
Answer-Only Protocol
The sub speaks only when answering the Dom and does not initiate conversation.
Formal Request to Speak
The sub uses an agreed phrase or title each time they want permission to talk.
Timed Silence
The rule lasts for a defined period rather than an entire scene or day.
Silent Service
The sub completes an agreed service task without speaking unless addressed or released.

How this task works

Ask Before Speaking is a protocol from the obedience & permission chart. This is an in-person task — it needs you and your Dom in the same room. It's a kink task — charged with power exchange, though not explicit.

Beginner-friendly: a good early assignment in a new dynamic. Standard care applies: negotiate first, agree on limits, and check in afterward.
