What it is

A Goodnight Request is an agreed way for the sub to ask permission to go to sleep, end the day’s protocol, or step out of an active period of submission. The request may be literal permission, a formal closing phrase, or a symbolic acknowledgment that the day is ending. It is different from an Evening Check-In, although the two can be combined.

Why it is submissive

A decision that would normally be private and automatic is brought to the Dom for acknowledgment or permission. The Dom closes the day, releases the sub from protocol, or gives a final instruction. Even when permission is routinely granted, the sub still approaches and waits for that closing response rather than simply signing off when they choose.

Why people may like it

For some subs, being released for the night creates a strong feeling of being looked after, accounted for, or still under authority at the very end of the day. Others enjoy the small suspense of waiting for an answer or the formality of asking rather than assuming. The ritual can be especially meaningful at a distance because it creates a clear final exchange instead of letting the conversation quietly fade out.

Ways to run it

Simple Sleep Request: The sub asks whether they may go to sleep and waits for the Dom’s answer before saying goodnight.
Formal Release: The sub uses agreed wording to request release from the day’s protocol or active submissive role.
Goodnight With a Final Report: The request includes one short update, completed task, gratitude, or issue the Dom should know before the day closes.
In-Person Goodnight Request: The sub approaches in an agreed posture or position and asks to be dismissed for the night.
Protocol-Only Request: The sub asks to end formal protocol while remaining free to stay awake, talk normally, or continue the evening.
